Sad news: a well-known mosaic by Vazha Bzhalava and Zaur Tsuladze was destroyed in Makhinjauri. The mosaic was located on the wall of a local school. This mosaic was included in the catalog of Georgian mosaics created by our foundation (georgianmosaics.com). It is also mentioned in the printed edition of the researcher of Soviet mosaics Nini Palavandishvili (“Mosaics of Soviet period in Georgia”. Sulakauri Publishers). Information about its destruction was passed to us by local residents who unsuccessfully tried to prevent its destruction. Unfortunately, we learned about the sad event a posteriori.
Why was there a blatant fact of destruction of a work of monumental art of Georgia, which its researchers evaluated as a significant example of cultural industrial heritage? The fact is that the above-mentioned school was subjected to reconstruction, and the construction company, which carried out the reconstruction works, simply did not bother with the mosaic. Despite the protest of the local population, the builders broke the mosaic under the pretext that the outer wall of the sports hall on which it was located had a leak to be repaired. At the same time, the construction company allegedly “considered” the possibility of dismantling the mosaic artwork and concluded that it could not be dismantled. In this regard, it is logical to ask the question: did the builders contact specialists, mosaic restorers? No, they did not. They made the “diagnosis” themselves and in order to avoid further discussion, they quickly cleaned the wall with perforators, actually within a day. According to the principle: said-done. Thus, the construction company completely ignored the opinion of the local residents, for whom the mosaic panel created in the late 70s was not only of aesthetic and cultural value, but for several generations it was also directly connected with the history of Daba Makhinjauri Public School. People loved this mosaic, were proud of it. Almost everyone has their own story connected with this panel.
It is clear that the managers of the construction company simply did not bother to at least google to find out if there are restoration specialists in Georgia, apparently thinking that our country is so backward and uncultured that such a profession is not in demand here.
So, as a note to all those who wonder whether it is possible to reconstruct buildings without destroying the mosaic works located on them: we declare with full responsibility that it is possible! There are professional restorers in Georgia who are capable of saving and preserving Soviet-era mosaics that are doomed to destruction. In particular, our Foundation has a lot of such projects, including complex and labor-intensive ones. We would like to remind you that the primary task of the Ribirabo Georgian Mosaic Support and Development Foundation is the restoration and conservation of modern mosaics on the territory of Georgia, and we provide all the resources available with modern restoration technology in order not to let the monumental cultural heritage of our country disappear.
Despite the fact that de jure works of mosaic art of the Soviet period are still considered exclusively in the context of architectural structures on which they are located, de facto they have an independent artistic value. Mosaics are a separate, large-scale and valuable layer of Georgian art. Their destruction is unacceptable!
